Online Interview

Hello everyone,

I have an invitation for an online interview. Due to travel reasons I only have a laptop and no second big screen.

Do you think a laptop is enough for a online interview with 3 rounds at a Tier 2 company or should I look for a second screen?

I went through my McKinsey recruiting all online during lockdown - you don't need a 2nd screen:

  1. It's easier to just focus on 1 screen camera which your interviewer will be on - you'll be more engaging instead of switching your eye back and forth between 2 screens
  2. Any digital exhibits are easy enough to see & interpret on a ~13in laptop if you make it full screen - if on zoom you can also annotate directly on the exhibit to really show your thinking and potentially stand out - this happens in real life all the time when testing slides with partners etc
  3. You don't want to fall into the trap of having pre-prepared study notes, frameworks etc in front of you or on a 2nd screen, this will actually distract you and cloud your thinking (plus it's easy for an interviewer to spot you doing and it's just a no no)

JMO - good luck!

Hi there,

1 screen is enough!

  • If you are travelling, make sure to have a quiet environment for the interview where you are not disturbed
  • Also consider a backup plan in case the WiFi is not working properly

All the best,

A laptop should be perfectly fine - I don't see specific needs why a second screen should be needed.

In terms of the online interview, you can find some tips below:

Good luck!

Yes that is totally fine as long as you have a working webcam and mic/speaker
