Networking advice

I am currently reaching out to network with various alumni from my college who are all working at a certain firm before their internship application deadline.

I am wondering whether it would be more effective to ask them to simply chat for 15-20 minutes about their experience, or to also ask them if they would do a case interview with me. I am aware that the latter is a big ask, but I am willing to ask this if it will increase my chances of a referral.

On the other hand, I don't want to lead with a big ask and believe I can form a strong connection simply by talking with them.

For context, I am from a semi-target school and am reaching out to alumni in the same clubs/groups as me.

Hi there,

Q: I am wondering whether it would be more effective to ask them to simply chat for 15-20 minutes about their experience, or to also ask them if they would do a case interview with me.

Between the two, I would go with the first option - asking to share their experience. Asking to do a case interview if you don’t know the person is a big ask and is more likely to be ignored.

Good luck!

In my experience it will be difficult to get someone to commit to doing a case study with you without knowing you unless they have specifically signed up for an event/volunteering session where that is expected.

Go in with a reasonably ask for 10-15 mins of their time. See how the conversation is progressing and then see how you think they might be open to helping you in your preparation.

All the best,

Hi there,

I would not overburden them.

Rather, go in and ask them about a quick chat, being mindful that even 15-20 minutes is quite long for an active consultant who works between 14 and 16 hours a day.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi,

I would not ask for a case interview mock. Just thinking back to my own experience, I would really have zero inclination or feel any obligation to give a total stranger 20-30 mins for a mock. Most of the time I did it only for close friends or friends of a close friend.

I would go for #1 instead.
