Must you be a top student for MBB?

Hi all,

I'm seeing everywhere in MBB (SEA) that everyone who gets in, whether they came from a international university or not, are almost geniuses at their academics (eg. all A* for A levels, top students of their universities/valedictorians). The fact that I've never seen someone with a more "average" academic accomplishment during their universities gives me doubt on whether this is feasible or not.

May I have your opinions on this? Is it because these particular students have a much quicker grasps on concepts or have excellent business intuition overall?

  • First of all, an excellent academic record does not necessarily have anything to do with how you perform in a job.
  • Moreover, in consulting, one of the selection criteria during the screening phase of your application process is academic excellence, which excludes candidates with mediocre academic records.

May I have your opinions on this? Is it because these particular students have a much quicker grasps on concepts or have excellent business intuition overall? 

It's not necessarily related to that (there might be a correlation here) but more so based on the fact that the screening criteria to move to the interviews are extremely stringent. 

For a positive resume screening, MBB usually expects:

  • Prestigious degree and top GPA

  • Relevant work experience (also for interns)

  • Leadership experience

  • For some offices/countries: time spent abroad

Hello there,

The truth is it doesn’t necessarily mean these students will be better on the job. Recruiters screen applications so they can advance those with a perceived higher probability of passing the interviews and figuring out the job. 

In reality, there’s a limited number of ways recruiters can get this signaling information at the application stage so they depend on stamps of approval given by other reputable organizations such as:

  1. Prestigious undergrad / internships since you’d have passed their application process
  2. High GPA since that could indicate high level of focus / intellectual ability 


At the end of the day, it’s worth noting this is not a perfect method but we have to deal with reality as it is not as we would like it to be.

  1. Diverse Backgrounds: While many candidates have strong academic records, MBB firms also value diverse experiences and skills. Some successful consultants come from non-traditional backgrounds or have unique professional experiences.
  2. Holistic Evaluation: The recruitment process often assesses more than just academic performance. Problem-solving skills, leadership potential, and cultural fit are critical. Candidates who demonstrate strong analytical thinking or exceptional interpersonal skills can stand out, even with average grades.
  3. Preparation Matters: Many candidates prepare extensively for interviews, focusing on case studies and behavioral questions. This preparation can sometimes overshadow academic performance.
  4. Networking and Referrals: Connections can also play a role. Candidates who have internships or networking contacts within MBB may have an advantage, regardless of their academic records.
  5. Resilience and Growth Mindset: Many successful candidates demonstrate resilience, a willingness to learn, and adaptability—traits that can be just as valuable as academic accolades.

While strong academics can be a common trait among MBB candidates and certainly make the screening process easier, they are not the sole determinant of success. Focusing on developing relevant skills, gaining experience, and preparing thoroughly can enhance your candidacy.

Q: Must you be a top student for MBB?

Not necessarily (I helped candidates who had relatively low grades and managed to get invitations), but if you don’t have top grades, usually you need to compensate for them somehow (the simplest way is with a strong referral).

Grades are an easy way for an employer to screen top candidates, which is why they are often used to select whom to invite.

It also depends on the company and country. Some companies will almost always accept candidates only with a certain minimum GPA for some countries, while others might be more flexible.
