Mckinsey values question

Hi,

I am having final round of interview with MCKinsey next week. I received an email stating that I should be prepared to answer with example on creating unrivaled environment for exceptional people. I am not getting an idea on how to approach it. Kind suggestion is highly appreciate.

warm Regards

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • First of all, I would like to assure you that this is a relatively new format for the personal fit part that McKinsey is currently experimenting with. As such, while you still need to thoroughly prepare, please keep in mind that this is new to both McKinsey and you.
  • I would advise you to prepare two situations for this McKinsey value in the same way you did for the other dimensions that are normally asked in the PEI. Moreover, please have a look at https://www.mckinsey.com/about-us/overview/our-purpose-mission-and-values to learn about what the value entails in order to spark your inspiration.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Think of this as just an extension/adjustment of the PEI. Just like the leadership, entrepreneurial drive, etc. they'll looking for a well structured, in depth, PARADE/STAR/SCORE story. You will also be asked questions throughout where you will have to dive deeper.

Hello,

Some good general pointers already mentioned by the other coaches. I will add a couple more tips based on my own experience interviewing candidates

  • Please make sure that your stories really answer the specific question being asked. In your situation, this means making sure the environment is really ‘unrivalled’ and the people were truly ‘exceptional’
    • Too often, candidates force-fit a similar enough story but it may not work and come off as ‘robotic’ and poor active listening
  • The best stories are authentic stories
    • You may have to think hard and long, but the strongest stories are the ones with real challenges, real struggles, real problems and learnings
  • Get feedback on your stories
    • Whether from friends or coaches, do ask for feedback as it will help to shape and sharpen your story

All the best!
