McKinsey Solve - Does Oceancleanup count?

Hi,

I recently completed the Solve Assessment:

I got the 3 games and have some questions I know no one can answer how I performed and how it’s scored but I’m sharing my experience in completing the game (Feb 2025) to get an idea of my overall performance based on my approach. I also wanted to ask if the new game Oceancleanup is still in its beta stage meaning they will not really take into account the score here or does my scoring here also impact my overall performance?

Any insights are highlight appreciated! Thank you

1) Ecosystem Game: I finished with 19 minutes remaining: when I did my first Chain I only had 7/8 species surviving and there were no chance for any news species to be added (at least to my knowledge during the game) so I moved on from that set of brackets it had the highest total calories produced hence why I chose it (0-30m) and I rebuilt a new chain using second bracket the most calories provided and then I did manage to get 8 species surviving - my approach was to start the producers first level base with the highest total calories produced and I chose each producer in order based on their total calories e.g 1st Plant 5500 2nd Plant 2 5200, 3rd plant 4800

Then I selected an eater one by one after I selected eaters for the second level with the same principle based on the total calories produced.

2- RedRock- I finished with 5 minutes remaining I believe I have gotta basically all of the the mini cases (6) correct and the first stage as well (fingers crossed) I did label occasionally the data points in the journal not always due to time restrictions and the fact that you could always the full info for that label

3- Ocean Cleanup - 3 Ocean sites, I think I did decent here I used common sense and averaged each total numerical trait for my microbes to see if they’re like be a good fit. I finsihed with 9m remaining. As this is a new game and was quite lengthy in the instructions I’m not very sure how much it impacts my overall solve score and what they want to see here.

Hi there,

Your performance sounds strong overall, both in terms of process (very quick and a clear logic based on what you describe with a steady pace) and outcome/product. Based on what you described, your structured approach and logical decision-making should have worked in your favor.

Regarding the last game, no one knows for certain and communication on its purpose is pretty sparse/non-existent. Based on what I've heard, it appears to be for calibration against the Ecosystem game. However, it's unusual that they've kept it in the loop since last summer without making it official - previous test games were not in the pipeline for this long.

In any case, I think you did well -> Fingers crossed!

Cheers,

Florian

Hey there 😊,

Great job completing the McKinsey Solve Assessment! The Ocean Cleanup game is fully considered in your overall evaluation, so your performance there does impact your final score.

1️⃣ Ecosystem Game

  • Achieving 8 surviving species is key, and starting with high-calorie producers was a solid approach.
  • Finishing with 19 minutes remaining suggests you worked efficiently.

2️⃣ Redrock Study

  • Completing most mini-cases correctly and labeling data points when necessary demonstrates strong analytical skills.
  • Finishing with 5 minutes remaining indicates effective time management.

3️⃣ Ocean Cleanup

  • This game assesses pattern recognition and data-driven decision-making.
  • Your approach of averaging numerical traits to match site requirements was logical and should contribute positively to your score.
  • Finishing with 9 minutes remaining suggests you handled the task well.

Final Thoughts

McKinsey evaluates both results and the process you use to reach them, so your structured approach and efficient time management are great signs. While they don’t disclose individual scores, you seem to have followed a strong problem-solving strategy, which is exactly what they look for.

Hope this helps, and best of luck with your application! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Best, Alessa 😇

Hi there,

Q: I also wanted to ask if the new game Oceancleanup is still in its beta stage meaning they will not really take into account the score here or does my scoring here also impact my overall performance?

Since January 2025, all the candidates I've heard from have had the Ocean Cleanup/Sea Wolf game, so it makes sense that they are considering the results now. In 2024, it was still randomly assigned, so it is likely that before January the results for that game were not counted.

It seems you did well with the game overall, I cannot see issues in your performance.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hey there,

Wishing you all the best in the Solve outcome.... it seems you did well

I'm of the view that Ocean Cleanup does count at this stage and is no longer in the Beta phase. This is based on discussions I've had with the recruiting team at McKinsey and outcomes of candidates that subjectively declared that they felt they did well (and subsequently passed) and those that said it was difficult or didn't do well (and subsequently failed)

All the the best! Hope you get through to the interview rounds
