McKinsey LATAM

Hi!

I am currently a junior-level consultant at a Tier 2 firm in the U.S. Originally from Latin America, I would love to return home to continue working in consulting. I have attempted to network with consultants at McKinsey and BCG in my home country's office but haven't had any luck so far.

For reference, I have full work authorization in that country, speak the language fluently, and have one year of consulting experience in the U.S. I recently came across a junior-level position at that office and would love to apply. I also have the recruiter for that posting as a LinkedIn connection.

Would it be advisable to reach out to her directly? If so, what would be the best way to approach this? I appreciate any guidance you can provide—thank you in advance!

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, and contrary to what other coaches have said, it is not necessarily helpful to contact the recruiter. While they are the ones doing the screening, they are too well trained to let you bias them.
  • Moreover, I would instead advise you to make more of an effort to get in touch with consultants in the target office, as it is really not that difficult a task, and then apply with a referral.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey application, pre-interview assessment and/or interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hey!

Yes, great idea! Since you already have them as a LinkedIn connection, you can send a concise and polite message expressing your interest in the role. Keep it professional and to the point—mention your background (Tier 2 consulting in the U.S.), your connection to the region (native, fluent in the language, work authorization), and your enthusiasm for joining McKinsey in your home country. You could say something like:

"Hi XY, I hope you're doing well! I came across the [position name] opening at McKinsey [Country Office] and am very interested in applying. As a junior consultant at [Tier 2 Firm] in the U.S. with full work authorization and a deep connection to the region, I would love the opportunity to contribute. I’d really appreciate any insights into the process and would be happy to share more about my background. Looking forward to your thoughts!"

This keeps it warm and professional while making it easy for them to respond. Best of luck! 🚀

Hi there,

LATAM hiring is relatively slow these days, which could be contributing to the slow/no responses situation. Could you DM me which office you are looking to move to? Each office is of a different situation right now, and in LATAM no matter which office you get in, the staffing could be quite transferrable. So another strategy is to reach out to a nearby office to expand the pool of people you can reach. I led a project with DR office before, and each person in the team came from a different country (E.g., Peru, Brazil, Chili, Columbia...)

Best,

Han

Hi there,

Definitely reach out via LinkedIn.

Alessa's message works well. I would only add one thing -> ask if the recruiter is willing to have a quick chat on the phone (much more personal and insightful).

Cheers and all the best,

Florian

Hey there,

Yes - in that - you could enquire to ask about eligibility / requirements, what role you'd be best suited for and any general queries you have about the recruiting process for that office

All the best

Yes, it's a good idea to reach out to the recruiter directly since you’re already connected on LinkedIn and meet key requirements like language skills, local work authorization, and relevant consulting experience. Keep your message short, polite, and focused, mention your background, interest in the position, and ask if she’d be open to a brief conversation. Just like the Tornado 12000, which delivers strong performance with precise targeting, your message should be clear, confident, and aimed exactly at what matters most.
