McKinsey interviewing

Hi there,

I have a few questions I'd like to ask.

1. How long does it usually take after completing the Solve assessment to hear back, and will the follow-up be via e-mail or phone?

2. Does the referral help to get a first round interview even if performance on solve wasn't very good?

3. How many interview rounds are there for McKinsey Europe? (I've seen people on reddit saying it is now 3 rounds instead of 2), and what is the difference between the rounds?

4. Which stage is the hardest to go through, the online assessment or one of the interview rounds?

McKinsey engagement manager with experience coaching candidates

Hi there,

The questions you are asking really depends on the office and the market. But I can tell you about my experience in London (hired as associate, then quickly promoted to Engagement manager).

1. In my case follow-up was via email. (experience hire - about 2-3 weeks). During the MBA its usually faster within a week or so

2. To be honest getting a referral helps getting selected but you normally need a minimum threshold for the game. Having said that I know many people who thought they did poorly - but actually the results was better than they thought and they got interviews/offer.

3. In london there were 2 rounds: first round consisted of 2 interviews and final round of 2-3 interviews. The difference is that the final round is usually more senior colleagues (AP or above) while first round is usually engagement managers.

4. It really depends on you and your luck. If you prepare cases it can better than the game :). If I was you - I would not underestimate any round. And please let me know if you want to practice cases with me! Happy to help.

Best,

Madjid

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, after completing the McKinsey Solve pre-interview assessment, candidates can typically expect to hear back within one to two weeks. The follow-up is usually via e-mail.
  • Moreover, a referral will most likely not counterbalance a subpar McKinsey Solve performance, but it can add weight to your application.
  • Lastly, there are typically two interview rounds with 1-3 interviews each, depending on the specific country. The main difference between the interview rounds is the increasing level of interaction with senior staff and the complexity of case studies. Regarding difficulty, this is highly dependent on personal preferences, but generally I would be the interviews.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

Hey there,

1. The usual time is around one week, however, at the moment it seems to be longer with some delays in certain areas.

2. No, the impact of the referral guarantees you a proper screening and a better chance to get an invite if your resume is on the weaker side but the Solve result and everything that follows is meritocratic.

3. Depends on the office. Each country uses a different system. Some have a longer 75min first interview round to screen candidates with more fit questions and a longer case, others have the traditional 2 interview rounds, some do all in one day.

4. Definitely the interviews. With the right prep, the Solve is relatively easy to pass and there are great resources out there to help you with that in a short amount of time. The interviewers are much trickier to prepare for and it takes way more time and ideally a good coach to become proficient.

Hi there,

To your questions:

1. How long does it usually take after completing the Solve assessment to hear back, and will the follow-up be via e-mail or phone?

1-2 weeks but there is no fixed timeframe. Sometimes the follow up is by phone, some others by email, depending on the recruiter preferences.

2. Does the referral help to get a first round interview even if performance on solve wasn't very good?

No. The referral only helps to accelerate the application review process and, if you pass it, to start sooner the interview process.

3. How many interview rounds are there for McKinsey Europe? (I've seen people on reddit saying it is now 3 rounds instead of 2), and what is the difference between the rounds?

Some offices are migrating from a 2 round structure to a 3 round structure. In this new 3 round structure, you do 1-2-1 interviews on each of the three rounds.

4. Which stage is the hardest to go through, the online assessment or one of the interview rounds?

Both are very hard. The hardest will depend on your strengths and preparation so be ready for everything!

Hi there,

1. How long does it usually take after completing the Solve assessment to hear back, and will the follow-up be via e-mail or phone?

Could be 1 day. Could be 3 months. Almost always via email.

Be case interview ready ASAP as it could come any time.

2. Does the referral help to get a first round interview even if performance on solve wasn't very good?

Yes. Referral + Background + Resume + Assessment + Office/Demand/Supply all play a role.

3. How many interview rounds are there for McKinsey Europe? (I've seen people on reddit saying it is now 3 rounds instead of 2), and what is the difference between the rounds?

It depends! The standard is 2. I've seen 1 super round and I've seen 4-5 rounds. It depends…you'll get what you get and your prep should not change!

4. Which stage is the hardest to go through, the online assessment or one of the interview rounds?

Depends on you. I find online tests hard. However, total prep time for interviews is probably 10x that prep time required for the online assessment.

Make sure you're getting ready for interviews now!

Hi there!

Let me take your questions one by one.

1. How long does it usually take after completing the Solve assessment to hear back, and will the follow-up be via e-mail or phone?

1-2 weeks is the average, but it can also take a month.

2. Does the referral help to get a first round interview even if performance on solve wasn't very good?

The referral is not a guarantee, but it does increase the chances of it passing screening.

Similar with the CV & CL. Aim to have them as strong as possible so they compensate lower scores in the test.

3. How many interview rounds are there for McKinsey Europe? (I've seen people on reddit saying it is now 3 rounds instead of 2), and what is the difference between the rounds?

Depends on the office and role. The classic process is 2 rounds of 2 interviews. This is how 80% of interviews go.

4. Which stage is the hardest to go through, the online assessment or one of the interview rounds?

More people fail at the screening phase overall, yet I would still claim that the interviews are harder. That's because the interviews are where actual ‘qualified’ candidates compete for the role, whereas at the screening phase, there are lots of random applications as well.

1. Usually 2-3 weeks, but sometimes may take 5 weeks.

2. Yes, a referral is exactly for that - to improve your chances of getting an interview. An interview offer will come from analysis of your test results, your CV/CL, and any recommendations.

3. 2 to 3 rounds. Depends on the specific European office… As you pass rounds you interview with more senior people. With partners you may or may not have typical cases (but you'll still have tough questions)

4. The interview rounds are more difficult, by far.
