MBB Lateral Hiring Market in 2025?

Hello all

I graduated from a top school (HYPSM) last year and am working at the moment at a bulge bracket bank. I am hoping to try and lateral to a MBB firm next year with 1.5-2 years of experience.

I have read a lot in the news about MBB hiring being frozen or slowed down over the past year, and that makes me worried that it will be difficult to score interviews even with a name brand employer and pretty transferable skills.

For your reference I have an almost perfect GPA and good extracurricular experience and also made it to the final round of one of the MBBs back when I was in college last year.

I know it is difficult to predict the future but is it realistic that a lateral hire would be possible for me in 2025 with my profile?

Hi there,

Q: Is it realistic that a lateral hire would be possible for me in 2025 with my profile?

Possible: yes. Whether that’s likely will mainly depend on:

  1. The recruiting situation (as you indicated, now it is not good in most countries, hopefully, it will be better in 2025)
  2. Whether you manage to get invitations from all MBB (key things for this: CV, Cover and referrals)
  3. Whether you have a good preparation for interviews

You cannot control #1, but you can control #2 and #3. Thus, I would focus on them.

If it doesn’t work out, you can apply again after 12 months in most cases, so you have nothing to lose by applying if MBB is your current goal.

Good luck!

Francesco

Thank you - one more question. What time of year is usually best to apply as someone with 1 - 1.5 years of experience? Are there specific months that line up with experienced recruiting cycles? I am targetting MBB in the American north east.

Hi there, usually recruiting in the US takes place from September to November and Q1 of the year. In your case, I would (i) look for a referral and (ii) ask them what is the hiring situation for your target office, so that you can calibrate when to apply in case they are not hiring much. You can find more on referrals here: https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles/networking-as-part-of-the-management-consulting-preparation-process. Hope this helps!

If you went to HYPSM, have a high GPA and are in a bulge bracket bank your odds of making to mbb are pretty high in most years. 2025 interest rates will at least start to come down and we'll ideally see a pick up in activity. While no one can predict the future I think you have a really good shot especially if you want to look at the PE practice within the firms.

Thank you - one more question. Do you think 1 - 1.5 years of experience is enough to apply? I have heard experienced hires typically have 3 or so years, but I am interested in moving as soon as possible.

At 2 years you'll have a very good shot of selling your expertise. At 1 year you'll be treated similar to a new grad.

This is very helpful and sorry for pestering with more questions. Would it be fine to apply with closer to 1 year of experience rather than 2? I am fine with having no tenure recognized and starting again as a new grad.

Hi there,

Hiring is already picking up now and everybody thinks it will be in full swing again next year. You should be okay!

Stay close to the industry news and to your connections in MBB as they can also tell you when it's a good time to apply.

All the best on your journey!

Cheers,

Florian

Recruiting situation is not great… but your profile is good, decent likelihood of getting an interview.
