I've been ghosted

Hello all! I was contacted by Mckinsey recruiter back in October, was sent the solve assessment and completed it on 14 November. Since then, I've emailed the recruiter requesting a status update but have heard absolutely nothing. Just crickets. I felt really good about the solve assessment. I finished feeling relieved and confident, I cannot imagine I did poorly. I used Francesco's class (it was awesome)

Any hope for this opportunity or should I move on?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ryan,

First of all, I am sorry to hear about your negative experience with McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, until you have received a rejection, I would advise you not to consider it one.
  • Moreover, continue to engage professionally with the recruiter. Perhaps sending another follow-up email or trying to contact another recruiter in the team could be beneficial. Maintain a positive and polite tone to keep the communication lines open.
  • Lastly, while waiting for a response, I would highly advise you to explore other opportunities as well. Diversifying your options will not only increase your chances of landing a consulting role but will also reduce the stress and disappointment in case this particular opportunity does not pan out.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hey Ryan!

It’s frustrating to feel ghosted, but don’t lose hope just yet! McKinsey’s recruiting process can be slow, especially during busy hiring cycles. While two follow-ups are reasonable, if you haven’t heard back after a month, it’s fair to consider other opportunities while leaving the door open for this one. Recruiters sometimes resurface unexpectedly, so it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re out of the running. Keep pursuing other paths but stay optimistic—unexpected opportunities often appear when you least expect them! 😊

Hey there,

It is completely not unusual for there to be long periods of no communication in the recruiting process. Totally frustrating, I understand. But what you can take heart in is that your application and test results are not "lost" and eventually you'll get your response.

Good on you for following up! It won't hurt to send another follow up - and even if you know someone in the office you've applied to or if you had a referral, you could ask them also to get in touch with recruiting too

All the best

Hi Ryan,

I've had processes where it took longer for recruiters to get back to me and I also felt like giving up, but then they got back to me and I moved to the next round (and in some cases I didn't).

I would say it's unclear what the answer is for now (and there could be lots of reasons for delays), so I would keep following up from time to time (maybe weekly) and in the meantime continue with applications for other opportunities as that will make you feel more comfortable with whatever the outcome is for this process.

Best,

Maria

Hi there,

Since it's been so long, I would try to contact them again but work on alternatives at the same time.

All the best,

Hey Ryan -- I think you'll have the most success connecting with a consultant in the office who can contact recruiting on your behalf. If you strike out about getting in touch with someone, I'd recommend an email reminder every two weeks- every week might annoy folks.

Hi there. Usually top consulting firms do not ghost candidates. I am confident they will get back to you at some point.

Having said this, you should be looking into alternatives.

Hi there,

It is not standard practice to go silent. You will receive feedback, both positive or negative. The year-end timeframe can slow things down. Keep following up with the recruiter or someone else from HR but also apply at other firms if you are not already doing so.
