Internship Offer at Oliver Wyman Doha

Hello!

I’m excited to share that I have received an internship offer at Oliver Wyman in Doha, starting at the beginning of March. It’s a three-month internship, and I’m determined to make the most of this opportunity to secure a permanent position.

I would greatly appreciate your guidance on the following:

1. Preparing Before the Internship: With 1.5 months before my start date, how can I best use this time to prepare and ensure I begin the internship as ready as possible?

2. Leveraging My OW Buddy: I’ve been assigned a Buddy whom I had the chance to meet during the OW event in Doha in November. How can I strategically re-connect and collaborate with them before and during my internship to maximise this mentorship? (we already connected on LinkedIn)

3. Standing Out During the Internship: What tips or advice would you offer to help me excel, stand out, and increase my chances of securing a full-time role at Oliver Wyman?

4. Evaluation Process: How will my performance be assessed during the internship? Are there specific processes such as weekly meetings, feedback sessions, or other evaluation methods that I should be aware of?

Thank you so much for your time and insights—they mean a lot as I prepare for this next chapter.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the internship offer from Oliver Wyman!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, while it is great to see how eager you are to prepare for your internship start, I would highly advise you not to worry about it. All major consulting firms provide you with excellent onboarding and training that will prepare you for everything you need to know. If you want to prepare on your own, I would advise you to focus on learning common MS Excel functions as well as MS Excel and PowerPoint shortcuts.
  • Moreover, this is a human connection, so I would highly advise you not to see your OW Buddy as just a resource to be exploited. The more genuine interest you show in other people, the more you will benefit from the connections.
  • Lastly, as almost all coaches are ex-consultants, you are unlikely to get an up-to-date perspective on the evaluation process. And to be honest, it does not matter, as you will most likely not be able to perform different just because you know the evaluation criteria. In order to stand out as an intern, I would advise you to do your best in your assignments and not shy away from visibility.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Congratulations on your internship! Here my tips:

  1. Preparing Before the Internship: Brush up on core consulting skills (problem-solving frameworks, Excel, and PowerPoint) - but keep it simple, don't overdo it.
  2. Leveraging Your OW Buddy:
    • Reconnect via LinkedIn before your start with a brief message expressing your excitement and asking for advice on preparing for the internship
    • During the internship, seek their guidance on navigating the firm’s culture and project expectations - ideally ask for a regular check-in
  3. Standing Out During the Internship:
    • Be proactive in seeking tasks and responsibilities
    • Deliver high-quality work, meet deadlines (if you can't, raise this in time), and show a strong willingness to learn
    • Ask questioins if you don't know what to do or need help
    • Build relationships with team members and ask for feedback regularly
  4. Evaluation Process: Internships typically include regular feedback sessions and a final evaluation. Ask your buddy or manager about specific expectations early on

Wishing you great success!

Hey!

Congratulations on your offer at Oliver Wyman! Here are some tailored tips for you:

  1. Preparing Before the Internship: Use the next 1.5 months to dive into Oliver Wyman's consulting frameworks, focusing especially on case studies like market sizing and profitability, as these are common at OW. It's important to understand the firm’s key sectors and recent work, particularly in the Middle East. Brush up on industry trends and try to align your understanding with the areas OW specializes in. Also, familiarize yourself with their values and culture through blogs, articles, and LinkedIn.
  2. Leveraging Your OW Buddy: Reconnect with your Buddy, expressing your excitement for the internship and asking for any advice on what to expect. Ask if they have any recommendations for preparing or resources to go over. During the internship, maintain communication with them—ask questions about team culture, the types of projects you’ll work on, and how you can best contribute. By showing initiative and a willingness to learn, you'll make the most of this mentorship.
  3. Standing Out During the Internship: Focus on being proactive—take ownership of tasks, ask for feedback, and show you can work both independently and in a team. Be reliable and communicate openly, ensuring you keep your team updated. Build strong relationships with your colleagues, demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, and make sure you’re always delivering high-quality work. Be open to feedback and show you’re committed to improving based on it.
  4. Evaluation Process: Expect to receive feedback throughout your internship, likely in weekly or bi-weekly intervals. This will likely cover the quality of your work, teamwork, problem-solving, and communication. It’s essential to be proactive in asking for feedback and clarifying any areas for improvement. Always seek to grow from the feedback provided to stay aligned with expectations.

Good luck with your preparations! Make the most of your time before the internship starts and during the internship itself by being proactive, open to feedback, and continuously improving. You’re on a great path!
