How long to hear back after interview

So, I interviewed with a small boutique firm this week, after having done some questions, an online live test and a first round interview online with two partners.

The final round involved 3 interviews held on Thursday and Friday, and the info given to me said to "expect a call discussing the outcome by the end of Friday 26th July". However, at the very end of one of my interviews, the interviewer stated that "most likely will be today, or perhaps Monday, I'm not actually sure about when you'll be contacted".

Note: this final interview was with a much more junior member of the firm (only about 2 YoE), so perhaps they may have been unaware of the exact process regarding offers etc.

I haven't heard back from the firm yet, with it now being the weekend. I'm a little bit worried - does this mean I'm less likely to have been accepted or am I overthinking it?

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with the boutique firm thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, please don’t read anything into this. While the consulting firm obviously didn’t meet their own deadline, this does not mean anything for your application.
  • Moreover, I would advise you to remain patient. If you haven't heard back by mid-next week, it would be appropriate to follow up with a polite email inquiring about your application status.

You can find more on this topic here: Boutique consulting companies.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Definitely over thinking it. They will inform you as soon as they can. One of the hardest part of the interview process is the patience required to wait for the outcome.

You'll hear back soon, all the best for it.

Hi there,

before offer decisions are communicated, they have to be aligned between HR and the interviewers in the process. This can sometimes take time for various reasons. A few common ones are listed below for a general overview:

  • internal scheduling conflicts between HR and the interviewers, especially when partners need to be involved
  • the firm is still conducting more final round interviews with other candidates and they might want to wait for that to play out to look at the full candidate picture before extending final offers
  • offers have been extended to “first choice” candidates and the firm is trying to keep “backup” candidates on hold until they know who accepted and who declined their first batch of offers
  • holidays or year-end shutdown delay the decision-making and communication process
  • there is uncertainty internally around budget and the exact headcount they can actually hire so they are trying to buy time

I know that this is unsettling and every candidate wants to have clarity on the status sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, you'll always have to wait for the official word.

However, it is best to just assume a rejection and continue with the recruiting efforts with other firms until you have a written offer in your hands. That way you at least won't lose time.

Hi there,

Q: I haven't heard back from the firm yet, with it now being the weekend. Does this mean I'm less likely to have been accepted or am I overthinking it?

This is not necessarily a bad sign. There could be several reasons why they are delaying the call even in the case of an offer. For example:

  1. Interviewers got busy and cannot align
  2. HR got busy and did not manage to call

If you don’t hear back after one week from the interview, it is fine to followup for an update.

Good luck!

Looks like they weren't able to meet to make the final decision. This is normal, and has no meaning in itself.

Since they told you they would reach out to you last Friday, don't call them on Monday, but it is fair to ask for an update after Wednesday.

Hi there,

It could be that some of the partners had other plans after the interviews and were not able to align/discuss your case.

I would not worry about it. You will likely hear either today or tomorrow about the final outcome.

Fingers crossed!

Hi,

There is really no way to know what is causing the delay, and speculating is also not going to change the eventual outcome.

My answer probably doesn't quell your anxiety, but you've done your best and best you can do now is just wait :)
