Got rejected for an event at McKinsey after they invited me to register

I was contacted about 3 weeks ago by a talent recruiter at McKinsey that I’m invited to the “Building the future of Tech“ event and I should register for the event! I did that and today I received an email that due to limited capacity, we are unable to offer you a spot!  I got disappointed, should I reach out the person who originally invited me and ask more details that why I got rejected?

Thanks in advance for your time

Hi there,

No, you shouldn't ask why you got rejected. First of all, you already got the answer (full event) and also this line of questioning isn't going to lead you anywhere because it's backward looking.

You should ask two other questions that can actually lead to something:

  • Is there a way to get on the waiting list or an extra seat?
  • Are there any other upcoming events that you could attend?

Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!
Moritz

Hi there, very sorry to hear. These things happen unfortunately and I would not recommend in this instance to enquire - these type of decisions are final and they will not reveal more information. if you want send me a DM with your CV and I can infer from there the reason for not making it among the priority group. This btw doesn’t mean you won’t have a chance in general, just now you didn’t make it among the top group. Warm regards, Freddy

Hi,

Probably they sent out more invitations to register than the spots available to ensure full attendance. And probably the invitation was not to participate, but to just send your CV to be considered for the event.

Or just an organisational error.

Don't bother too much about these events and concentrate instead on your interview preparation and getting some solid referrals.

Good luck!

Hi there,

Q: Should I reach out to the person who originally invited me and ask for more details about why I got rejected?

If you want you might try to reach out, however they won’t probably provide specific feedback. Even if you have been rejected from an event, you can still apply for a position at the company.

In case you want to check for possible improvements for your next application, I would recommend to check the following:

Good luck!

Hi,

They always send more invitations to be sure to be full. Nevertheless it's not a big problem, it not correlated to the quality of your resume. You still can apply to McKinsey.

Cheers,

Alexandre

Hi there,

Alas, it wasn't a personal invite :/ Sorry about that BUT, just know there are tons of different ways to get noticed/invited to other things here - that event was not make or break for you.

(I would not reach out to the talent recruiter)

Hi!

An invitation in this context doesn't necessarily mean that you get a spot.

It means that you submit your application to be considered for the event.

Sorry that it didn't work out on this occasion. I'm sure that it was competitive, but at the same time probably your application could also be improved (e.g., CV, cover letter).

Good luck!
Cristian

You were not rejected. When you signed up it was too late and it was full… that's not a rejection.
