Expert Pricing Consultant at Bain: Interview

Hi there,

I'm preparing for my Expert Pricing Consultant role at Bain NYC, interviews. Does anyone have any insight on what I shall expect? I'm currently prepping for my SOVA exam.

2 years ago almost to the day, I made it all the through the entire interview process for the Generalist Consultant role and didn't get an offer after the very last (case) interview.

Anyone know how the Expert Pricing interview process differs, if at all?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Congrats on the interview!

The good news is that the interview process and content are essentially the same as for the Generalist Consultant role—fit and case interviews in the same format. You can expect at least some focus on Pricing topics for the case but not exclusively.

However, be aware that some Bain offices occasionally include a dedicated market sizing interview. It’s worth double-checking with your recruiter to see if this applies to your process.

One crucial concept to master for Bain interviews is their Answer First Principle. This means starting with a top-down approach and presenting a clear hypothesis right at the beginning of the case.

If you’d like more detailed guidance, feel free to reach out. I’ve written an in-depth article on the Bain interview process and the Answer First principle.

Cheers,

Florian

The generalist and expert interview processes are quite similar.

You can expect a fit interview and several cases, with some potentially focused on pricing topics (though not all will be).

If you’ve failed a previous process, I strongly recommend working with a coach to maximize your chances this time.

Hey there,

Just to add on to what my Coaching Colleagues have said, topically - I would definitely practice price sensitivities and elasticity techniques / cases for this too!

All the best

Congrats on landing the interview! The interview components should be the same (fit, case), but you should expect to see an emphasis on pricing expertise in the fit and case questions. The preparation process (besides the knowledge you've acquired through your work experience) should be essentially the same.

Here are a few tips for you:

  1. Clarify expectations with the recruiter
  2. Brush up on your pricing topics / previous experience
  3. Do mock cases with experience partners or a coach

Feel free to reach out to discuss!
