Does anyone have any insight into Bain’s Women’s Networking Breakfast?

Hello

I have been invited to a networking breakfast at Bain. I am taking it as a good sign as I had to submit my resume for the invitation. Does anybody have insight for what might be expected of me, or what I should be doing to prepare?

Any insight at all would be appreciated as I am very excited and don’t want to misstep.

Thanks so much in advance.

Hello Hannah,

While I cannot talk about Bain specifically, I can share a bit about very similar BCG initiatives - and I suspect they are similar enough to be relevant.

First, you are right to see it's a very good sign to be invited! High potential candidates are screened and invited to these things. Main reason is that unfortunately a lot of really bright women still hesitate to apply, thinking that they are not good enough, even if they are so well prepared - so these initiatives aim to give a relaxed, informal way to network with other women (typically, though sometimes there would be male consultants as well).

In terms of how to make the most of it, I would encourage you to:

  • Practice your elevator pitch: a little bit about yourself such as your experience, your education, your motivation to join consulting  >> it's a good chance you will be asked (informally) to introduce yourself

  • Dust off your knowledge about your local Bain office. It does not have to be extensive, but it is always good to know a bit (e.g., even where their office location is) when engaging in conversations with people from that office.

  • Think of some questions you would like to get answers to. Would suggest you don't go into the technicalities of the admission process (e.g., what is the application deadline for this and that intake - this is more HR question), but broader questions about consulting life, type of projects, even advice on how to be a become a great candidate.

Note: it is perfectly fine to have questions on how it is to be a women in consulting (e.g., how women balance personal and work life, if they have personally encountered biases, talk about impostor syndrome). However, I would try to not make a 100% of my questions about this topic. A lot of general consulting stuff applies equally to men and women.

Some other thoughts: I think it helps to (try to) be relaxed and bring your true self to the discussions. A lot of people, and women in general see networking events as something negative. Instead, I encourage them to reframe it to “relationship building” and bring out their genuine curiosity about consulting, other people's experiences and the pleasure in making connections.

I hope it helps and would be very happy to chat more if you have any other specific questions I might have not covered.

Best,

Ariadna

Hi Hannah,

Congrats!

  • The trick is to not worry about any evaluation but enjoy the time, and speak to as many consultants and firm reps as you want.
  • Nothing to prepare for this. The more natural it is for you the more natural you come across and the better you might be perceived

All the best,

Florian

Hi Hannah,

First of all, congratulations on the recruiting event invitation from Bain!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • I would advise you to just enjoy the recruiting event, be genuine and build meaningful connections. There is nothing to lose, and it’s overall a good sign when you got invited.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
