Do MBB do reference calls in Germany?

Hi,

I would like to know if it is common for MBB firms to directly contact your previous employer for a reference check in Germany and asking for performance and reasons of leaving?

I am concerned about this because my previous company did not pass my probation, and I didn't offer this information to the company I was interviewing with, as I was still in the role when I interviewed with a MBB firm.

The HR representative at my previous company mentioned that it is common to use a “reference letter” as the official document in Germany, and they do not provide any specific contact person on it. According to them, companies in Germany typically do not conduct reference calls, and the “reference letter” is the only document that is needed when joining a new firm.

How accurate is this information?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, in Germany, it is indeed not common to conduct reference calls.
  • Moreover, most consulting firms will conduct background checks, which are solely focused on whether the information in your applications files is accurate or not.
  • Lastly, please rest assured that any well-trained recruiter will understand that if you left a company within the first 6 months of probation, you either didn’t pass it or didn’t like it at all and left on your end. As such, I do not see any reason to be worried at this point.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi

I am not familiar with the German market but usually MBB will not ask for referees to validate performance and reasons for leaving. It is usually to verify employment history, start and end dates etc. (just from my experience).

Hi there,

I don't think so. If they check something, they will check the accuracy of the entry on your CV (firm, position, time).

Congrats on the offer!

Cheers,

Florian

Hi,

Not in Germany, but I was asked for references when I applied for BCG. They were not called up though.

All the best!
