Call after final interview at McK

I recently interviewed with McKinsey. The final round was with just one partner. It’s been 3 days since the interview, and I reached out to the recruiter asking for an update. I received a response from them, saying that they would schedule a call for next week, in which someone from the team will discuss my scores and outcome. Is this likely a rejection or an offer? Anything I should know going into the call?

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with McKinsey thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, I would highly advise you not to read anything into it. You will get feedback either way, so it really doesn't mean anything.
  • Moreover, be prepared to receive constructive feedback. Take detailed notes during the interview as these can be invaluable to your professional development, regardless of whether the outcome is positive or negative.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Q: I received a response from them, saying that they would schedule a call for next week. Is this likely a rejection or an offer? Anything I should know going into the call?

It is very difficult to guess what it might be.

There could be multiple reasons why they might have postponed either a positive or negative decision (for example, they might need to complete the current interviews in the pipeline).

Although I understand your desire for a clear answer, the only options I see at this stage are (i) to wait for the results or (ii) to continue the process with other firms, if available, until you have an outcome.

Good luck!

Hi there,

What a nerve-wracking feeling! I remember being in your shoes and having to wait over a week before the partner called me with the good news of getting into McKinsey. Therefore, dont take the wait period as an indication of a particular outcome.

You already put in all the hard work-- try to distract yourself to not get stressed and I really hope you get the offer 😊

Really hard to say what it will be. Typically if you get an offer, a partner or an interviewer calls you to congratulate you on your performance and to welcome you to the firm. However every office has a different process and it changes all the time.

You can't tell.

Try not to read into it.

It can take even two weeks to hear back from the final round. I waited for 10 days.

I know it's painful.

But these ‘signs’ don't mean anything for now.

Try to keep yourself busy with something else in the meantime.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

they might not have made a decision at this point and are just buying some time by telling you as to when you'll receive an update. So it could very well be that you might get that call from a partner or interviewer with an offer. It's unclear at this point so you'll just have to wait for the official word unfortunately.

Fingers crossed

Hi there,

Neither an offer nor rejection at this point. Can go both ways and the waiting times post-interview and even in between rounds have become a bit longer.

Fingers crossed!

Probably none, as of now. They probably don't know the result yet - but they will by next week.

Hang in there!
