BizOps vs. Consulting Pre-MBA work experience

Question

I am in strategy consulting (T2 / B4) with 3 YOE. I recently received an opportunity to join a BizOps / Strategy position at a growing late-stage tech startup. Has anyone seen people with BizOps / Strategy roles move to complete their M7 MBAs? Was wondering whether BizOps type roles are competitive for M7 compared to staying / joining another T2 / B4 firm?

Few points to understand before we move to the answer:

At the end of the day it is your personal decision where you want to move to.
And you should also not take a decision simply because it will give you a good “next-step”.
Lastly, different people will have different opinions to this question - so eventually the decision will bear down on your shoulders only.

Having said that, I am of the opinion that the BizOps role might give you a better edge not just in terms of a more vibrant profile, but also give you a very different experience that you will cherish a lot more as opposed to spending more time in consulting only.

Obsolutely! Honestly, I've seen people get into M7 (and other MBAs) with a vast array of backgrounds/experiences.

Moreover, I think BizOps actually complements your strategy consulting role quite nicely (you are getting experience in both the “thinking” and the “doing”).

Especially given that you already have 3 years of experience in strategy consulting, a BizOps role will only diversify your experience and complement your profile from the perspective of MBA admissions. (Of course, this shouldn't be the only consideration you take into account when considering the role)
