BCG vs McKinsey

I'm comparing BCG and McKinsey to make an informed decision about which firm to pursue. Here's what I want to know:

I want to know the comparisons between BCG and McKinsey in terms of prestige, field of expertise, exit opportunities, compensation, and most importantly, the future of each firm. Which firm is likely to perform better in the future? Will BCG continue to stay as the #2 firm, or does it have the potential to surpass McKinsey in the coming years?

Hi there,

In a nutshell, I think McKinsey has a slight edge in all objective dimensions you mentioned.

However, one thing to consider for you is where did you feel most at home during recruiting.

In the long run, this is much more important than the slight edge McK has over BCG on more objective metrics. It will influence your happiness, performance and trajectory much more.

Hence, make sure to network during the applications, ask the right questions to your interviews, observe how consultants interact with each other if you are taking part in recruiting events (big one!), look how HR treats you, etc.

Cheers,

Florian

Speaking of the company itself (not personal preferences like office location, compensation, etc.), what type of person is more suitable for BCG, and what type is more suited to McKinsey?

Hey!

When comparing BCG and McKinsey, both firms are highly prestigious in the consulting industry. McKinsey generally has a slight edge in global prestige due to its larger size and history, but BCG is not far behind. Here's a breakdown:

  • Prestige: McKinsey has traditionally held the top spot in management consulting, often seen as the more prestigious option. BCG is a solid #2 and is closing the gap in terms of influence and recognition.
  • Field of Expertise: McKinsey has a broader global reach and often leads in public sector, healthcare, and large-scale corporate transformations. BCG is known for innovation, particularly in digital transformation and sustainability.
  • Exit Opportunities: Both firms offer strong exit opportunities, with alumni landing leadership roles in various industries. McKinsey may have a slight edge due to its size, but BCG’s reputation is just as strong.
  • Compensation: Both firms are competitive in terms of salary, with slight regional or role-based differences, but overall, they are quite similar in compensation structures.
  • Future Outlook: McKinsey is likely to remain the dominant firm due to its scale, but BCG's emphasis on innovation and tech could see it continue to challenge McKinsey in the coming years. It's unlikely BCG will fully surpass McKinsey soon, but it will stay competitive.

When I had to decide between offers from both firms, I ultimately chose McKinsey and was very happy with the decision, especially given the network and opportunities it opened up. Either choice would be great, depending on your career goals and personal fit with the firm's culture!

Good Luck! Alessa

If you already have 2 offers, this is a harder decision. I think you need to look at the details in the specific system/region you are playing in. And go one level deeper. What industries are each firms strong at? Which firm has more partners in which areas?

If you are thinking of which firm to apply to, you need to apply to both. The chances of you getting 1/1 success is rare.
