Bain or McKinsey Brussels?

Could anyone familiar with Bain and Mckinsey Brussels explain the pros and cons of each office? I am lucky enough to have received an offer from Bain and am in final round with McK. I am currently thinking of accepting the Bain offer and stepping out of the McK process. Main reason is that cultural fit with Bain interviewers was so much better, and I assumed they are relatively similar in terms of prestige, learning opportunities and comp. Is this a good assumption or am I making a mistake by not continuing the McK process?

Well, you're unlikely to get an unbiased answer here. And neither is mine.

A few years ago I had exactly the same choice to make that you now have ahead of you and I chose the way you're leaning.

Prestige, learning opportunities and comp are indeed basically the same. Maybe with one qualification: McK has clearly the bigger brand when it comes to general population (e.g. my aunt would know McK, she probably has not heard of Bain), but they are equal when it comes to recruiters, CEOs of exit opportunities, etc.

For me, the decision came purely down to where I felt more comfortable. In MBB you'll likely spend more time with your team members than with your partner and culture is what let's you enjoy the job or hate it. So you'll better pick an environment that feels right. I'm not saying anyone firm's culture is better, but it's about which ones fits you and your preferences better.

For me, it was a clear decision to make, as Bain clicked much better with my personal style than the competition. I'm glad I made this decision and didn't look back once.

Henning is totally right. I was as well in a similar situation and chose only based on culture. I made sure to have the offers on the table and visited the offices from both firms several times in the 1-2 weeks after that to talk to as many people as possible. The decision was very clear then to me.

Hi there,

I would recommend making a decision based on cultural fit. Choose the one which will be more comfortable personally for you.

Hope it was helpful,

Hi there,

Sorry to say but McKinsey is much much stronger in terms of reputation, prestige, and exit ops. So, if this is what you care about, please don't convince yourself otherwise.

That said, I completely agree with the others in that, rankings ain't everything. If you care about culture, fit, feeling supported, etc. (you should), then go for the company that you feel does this best for you!

But, in chosing, make sure you are fully aware that Mck is the far stronger brand.

P.S. For what it's worth, if I were given the choice between McK and, say, Bain or BCG, I would pick Bain/BCG because I know I fit their cultures better. But, I would know that I'm "giving up" working at the #1 firm.

Hello!

Congrats!

This said, never walk out of the process with Mckinsey!

  • Why if in the 2nd round you see an incredible fit?
  • What if then Bain results into a disaster, and a few months later you want to move?
  • What if in the future you want to go back to McKinsey and you missed the opportunity to have had an offer with them already -and make them look you with good eyes-?

Not to mention the great learning opportunity that an interview is.

Furthermore, McKinsey is a stronger firm, with wider network and alumni, which is for me the key KPI -cultural is huge, don´t get me worng, but can you get that after meeting 4 people?-

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi there,

Congratulations on the Bain offer. I would consider the following elements to make a decision:

  1. Where do you want to be in 5-10 years? Based on that, look for how many alumni are more present in that field. It is not relevant that McKinsey has more Alumni, if they are not related to what you really want to do in your life. If you still don't know, everything equal the McK brand is stronger.
  2. If you consider the average consultant/partner you talked to in each company, which one would you rather be? Quoting Jim Rohn, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. And you will spend a lot of time with your colleagues in the next years. Be sure you chose a company where people are close to the person you want to become. In your case, it seems clear the answer is Bain.
  3. What is your gut feeling telling you? Our gut feeling is able to catch elements we cannot rationalize. You may “feel” a company is better, but don’t know exactly why. Don’t base your decision on that only, but dig deeper on why you feel that way.

If you want to do extra due diligence, contact Alumni (not current consultants) that worked ideally for both if you decide to go on and land both offers. You will learn more in a 30min call with them than with any online research you may do.

Best,

Francesco

Hey there,

Fully agree with Ian here. I would definitely not drop out of the McKinsey process just yet.

Once you have the offer, you can make a more educated decision (with more observation points on the McKinsey process and people). Also, having received the offer might keep the doors open for McK should you want to switch at a later stage...

Personally, I'd be happy at both firms, decided for McKinsey for the reasons Ian stated, and could not have been happier with the decision, the type of projects, experiences, and the people I met during my journey.

Lastly, McK has a global staffing model and the credo to build your own McKinsey, allowing you to shape your direction, locations, and projects much more. I was part of the German office, yet, only had one engagement in Germany during my time...

Cheers,

Florian
