Are you "allowed" to use a calculator on McKinsey's Imbellus test?

I'm curious if the rules actually allow an external calculator to be used. The fact that they want results rounded to 3 decimals numbers seems like a very low margin for error when typing numbers in and doing calculations off-screen. Also, why would they include an online calculator if you could just use one offline?

Hi there,

it's fine to use external calculator - they don't disallow (and wouldn't be able to check anyway).

Online calculator is there to even the playing field. Besides, it's unclear whether using the latter option influences the process score, so suggest, as long as you have time to use the built-in calculator. If you're in a rush, just skip it and focus on precision through your own instead.

Wish you all the best.

Hi,

if the calculator is specifically embedded in the process, there might be reason to assume that its usage is being tracked or considered “good form” at least. If having to use this calculator instead of an external one is making you feel like you will not pass it, then use an external one. If you are just trying to optimize for convenience, I think you have bigger fish to fry in your preparation and should focus on those.

Good luck

Hi there!

Try to see all these tests that are part of the recruitment process as tests that want to verify the basic skills that you'll need later anyway in the recruitment process.

Basically, if you're not good enough to pass the game, then you would definitely not pass the interviewer.

Thus, aim to practice the same way you'd do it for the interview - without a calculator. This way you'll actually improve your actual skills, rather than finding techniques to work around them.

All the best with the test!
Cristian

Doesn’t really answer the question asked, which is if a calculator is allowed on the test. And besides, there is no way anyone doing this test without a calculator would be able to finish in time.

Hi there! Perhaps there's a misunderstanding regarding the question. It's not clear how the calculator is used as part of the assessment for the game, so my advice is to use the one they provide. Hope this clarifies your question

Hi there,

1) I'm curious if the rules actually allow an external calculator to be used.

You are allowed to use one (they cannot check anyway), but unless you are running out of time I would recommend using the one within the game. This because:

  1. Using only an external one could impact the process score
  2. There could be issues with the approximation of the numbers as you mentioned

2) Also, why would they include an online calculator if you could just use one offline?

Given they made the calculator part of the flow of the Redrock, most likely they will consider its usage as part of the process score and embed it for this reason.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi there,

On the McKinsey Imbellus test, YES you are llowed to use an external calculator.

That said, I would still then type the final formaulas into the on-screen calcualtor so that it is registered and you have the results on the tab on the right-hand-side

Hello,

Ian's answer is spot on - I believe you are allowed to use an external calculator, but I also recommend using the on-screen calculator to be safe.
