Hello,
do you know what type of case studies are done during the interviews for the Procurement service line?
Thanks,
Hi,
80% of the cases will be standard McKinsey cases. By standard, I mean that they'll include various industries and various case types (Market entry, product, ops, public sector, market-sizing, etc)
You might have 1-2 cases related to procurement to test your knowledge.
Overall, your prep should not differ from anyone else on this forum, other than that you should cover additional functional aspects, i.e. procurement
Best
Hey there,
It will be a mix of cases in a domain-relevant context as well as cases set in a completely different context.
Be aware that frameworks were applicable in the 2000 years, the era of Victor Cheng and Case in Point. McK has long caught up on this and the cases you will get during the interviews are tailored in a way to test your creativity and ability to generate insights, not remember specific frameworks.
In fact, it will hurt you when you try to use a framework on a case that calls for a completely different approach. Also, it gives a false sense of security that will translate to stress once you figure out how your approach won't work during the real interview - I have seen this so many times...
Your goal should be to learn how to build issue trees no matter the context, industry, or function of the case. I have a system for that, especially for McKinsey cases, that teaches you exactly this approach + a ton of exercises I give my coachees to progress their ability to come up with deep, broad, and insightful frameworks for each case individually.
Happy to help if needed!
Cheers,
Florian
Hi,
I am currently preparing for interviews for the Procurement Service Line. Maybe we can exchange some insights we both have.
Best,
Frederike
Hi there,
Not sure about the Procurement service line specifically, but the candidates I helped with McK Operations had a mix of traditional cases and operations cases, so I would prepare for both.
Hope this helps,
Francesco
I coached a candidate last year who received an offer for the procurement service line in McKinsey Chicago. Based on his experience, he was asked a combination of traditional (profitability, market entry) as well as operations (supply chain, operational improvement) cases.
Good luck!
Hi there,
please prepare for both operations AND traditional types of cases!
Cheers, GB
Hi there,
Just adding to the rest of the answers, I completely agree you need to prepare for both standard cases and specialty cases.
In terms of Procurement Preparation
Remember for procurement/supply chain, first you need to ask objective. In general this will either be "Reducing Costs" or "Fixing/Optimizing Production"
Within Reducing Costs, this could be contract renegotiation, finding new supplies, locking in futures contracts, automating processes (replace labor), changing transport methods, etc.
Within Optimizing Production, this could be a lot of the same i.e. automating processes, finding new suppliers, changing transport methods
Generally, you'll want to segment the supply chain/procurement process to identify problems (i.e. where taking the longest or costing the most).
For Practice Cases Try The Following
1) Search on Operations here (already done): https://www.preplounge.com/en/management-consulting-cases?language=en&topic[]=8&sort=real-case-desc&page=1&perPage=20
2) Google and casebooks are your friend. For example (https://managementconsulted.com/case-interview/case-interview-examples-master-list/)...go to Accenture, Amex, AT Kearney, Deloitte, and LEK sections which specifically call out operations.
3) Send me a message and I can provide you with a few good ones and/or case you in them!
Hello!
I am with Vlad on this one: +80% of the cases are going to be the classic ones. Hence, for Mck Procurement service line and for generalist overall, you have 2 main workstreams ahead:
1. FIT INTERVIEW
The "Integrated FIT guide for MBB" has been recently published in PrepLounge´s shop (https://www.preplounge.com/en/shop/tests-2/integrated-fit-guide-for-mbb-34)
It provides an end-to-end preparation for all three MBB interviews, tackling each firms particularities and combining key concepts review and a hands-on methodology. Following the book, the candidate will prepare his/her stories by practicing with over 50 real questions and leveraging special frameworks and worksheets that guide step-by-step, developed by the author and her experience as a Master in Management professor and coach. Finally, as further guidance, the guide encompasses over 20 examples from real candidates.
You can see plenty of reviews from candidates who purchased it already.
Furthermore, you can find 2 free cases in the PrepL case regarding FIT preparation:

1. Multiplying double digit numbers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ndkkPZYJHo
2. Leveraging math tools (Mimir math for iOS), Math tool on Viktor Cheng website to practice
Furthermore, you should practice as much as you can, and ensure that you cover:
1. Profitability cases- basic profitability framework.
2. Idea generation cases: for any specif issue
3. Growth cases: market penetration, new product launch, product mix change, etc.
4. Pricing cases
5. M&A cases
6. Valuation cases
7. Value chain cases
