From Intern to Full-Time Consultant: Manage Work-Life Balance

Aside from the more technical facets of transitioning from an intern to a full-time consultant, which we have been discussing in detail so far, there is a more personal upgrade that you must do as well. While an internship lasts for a relatively short time of 2-3 months, your path of full-time consulting will be going on for a lot longer.

At this point, we turn our attention to the often-bandied phrase in consulting – “it is not a sprint, it is a marathon”

It refers to achieving a balance between the intensive demands of consulting, and the ever-present priorities of life. The quicker you achieve this balance, and the better you manage it, the longer your runway can be in consulting.

How to Manage Your Work-Life Balance

  • Shift from Balance to Integration: As a full-time consultant, strict work-life balance may not always be feasible. Instead, focus on work-life integration. Learn to blend personal priorities into your demanding schedule creatively. This might mean scheduling short workouts between client calls, using travel time for personal development, or finding ways to combine work trips with personal interests.
  • Master Boundary Setting and Time Management: Unlike as an intern, you'll need to proactively set and communicate your boundaries. Clearly establish your working hours with your team and clients, while remaining flexible for urgent matters. Learn to say no to non-essential requests professionally, offering alternatives when possible. As you progress, develop the skill of effective delegation to manage your workload and develop your team members.

  • Prioritize Physical and Mental Well-being: The demands of full-time consulting can take a toll on your health if not managed properly. Make a conscious effort to prioritize sleep, nutrition, and regular exercise. These aren't luxuries but necessities for maintaining high performance. Remember, sustaining your health is crucial for long-term success in this demanding career.
  • Leverage Technology and Firm Resources Wisely: As a full-time consultant, you'll have access to more resources to help manage your work-life balance. Familiarize yourself with and utilize your firm's policies on flexible working arrangements, mental health support, and family leave. These resources can significantly aid in managing your work-life balance, especially as your career progresses and personal circumstances evolve.
  • Strategic Use of Time Off: As a full-time consultant, your time off becomes more valuable and potentially scarce. Learn to make the most of it. When on vacation, practice disconnecting fully from work, setting clear out-of-office messages and delegating urgent matters. Even if long vacations are challenging, plan regular short breaks or long weekends to recharge. Actively pursue hobbies and interests outside of work to maintain a sense of personal fulfillment and perspective.

Remember, managing work-life balance as a full-time consultant is an ongoing process that requires constant attention and adjustment. By implementing these strategies early in your transition from intern to full-time consultant, you'll be better equipped to sustain high performance, enjoy your work, and thrive both professionally and personally in the long run.

Conclusion

The transition from intern to full-time consultant requires not only professional adjustments but also the management of your work-life balance. By integrating personal priorities into your schedule, practicing effective time management, and prioritizing your well-being, you can achieve long-term success and maintain balance both professionally and personally.
