Switch from accounting to finance role

Question

I’ve been studying accounting and have done a couple of internships, but I’m realizing that I might want to switch to a more finance-focused role, like financial analysis or investment banking. What steps should I take to make this transition? Do I need to get additional certifications, or can I leverage my accounting background to move into finance? I’m not sure how to make this switch without starting from scratch. Happy to hear your thoughts.

from our opinion, your accounting background is a great starting point for moving into finance! Focus on highlighting your skills with financial statements and analysis as you can transfer them to the industries you're looking for.

We also recommend to network with people in the roles you are targeting. You will learn more about what's needed and sometimes this can be an easier starting point than sending a "cold" application.

You don’t necessarily need certifications, but something like CFA Level 1 or a financial modeling course can help. Start with roles like FP&A or corporate finance to bridge the gap, and frame your accounting experience as a strength.
