Dear Prelounge,
We are a team of students aiming to work at one of the MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) after our studies. To prepare for this, we sought inspiration from current consultants on LinkedIn. However, this manual process was quite time-consuming. Hence, we automated the entire procedure and analyzed over 5,000 profiles of consultants from McKinsey, BCG, and Bain in Germany to provide you with inspiration for your application and answer questions like:
- What is the average GMAT/TOEFL score?
- Which organizations and student clubs are mentioned?
- Which are the best universities?
- How are recruitments currently taking place?
- How long does it take to get promoted?
You can find the entire report uploaded here: www . careeriq . work / awards
Here are a few key findings (unfortunately, we can't post images here):
- A total of over 5,000 profiles, of which 2,208 are from McKinsey, 1,733 from BCG, and 885 from Bain.
- Awards: 1,571 profiles (30%) have, on average, more than one award listed on their profiles. The most frequently mentioned are the Deutschlandstipendium (140), followed by the Deans list (75) and the PROMOS Scholarship (62).
- Hirings: New hires have noticeably decreased since the beginning of the year and currently stand at about 66 per month across all three consultancies. In comparison to 2022, where roughly 1,200 new individuals were recruited, 600 consultants have been hired in the first 9 months of 2023. We thus estimate a decrease of about 25-30%.
- Internships: Internships play a crucial role in successful applications. More than 50% (2,601) of profiles, on average, list 2.7 internships with an average duration of 3 months. Popular employers include McKinsey (33), Bain (175), and KPMG (228). Additionally, major DAX companies like BMW and Daimler are favored.
- Position Hierarchy: Currently, out of the 5,000 employees at the MBBs, approximately 1,500 are Consultants, 50 are interns, 150 are student workers, and 600 are managers. On average, the promotion time between all levels is 2-3 years, with the Associate Partner/Principal leaning towards 3-4 years.
- Universities: On average, 60% of all employees have both a bachelor's and master's degree listed on their profile, and 12% have a doctorate. The top universities for the German market are TUM (561), University of Mannheim (427), and RWTH Aachen (426). International universities are led by the University of St. Gallen (205), London School of Economics (195), and Bocconi (148). For MBAs, INSEAD leads (84).
- Test Scores: Due to the unstructured nature of the data, the number of available data points is slightly lower. In total, we extracted 113 GMAT and 148 TOEFL scores. The average GMAT score was 718/800 and TOEFL was 113/120.
- Further data points in the report include: Certificates, languages, organizations, patents, projects, publications, skills, and volunteer work.
Disclaimer 1: The information presented here is based on the availability from public profiles. For instance, GMAT scores might be slightly elevated as we assume individuals scoring less than 700 might not post their GMAT score on LinkedIn. Disclaimer 2: Since many data points are entered manually, data consolidation can sometimes be challenging to automate.
We plan to conduct further analyses for sectors like Investment Banking, and Private Equity/Venture Capital in the future. Please feel free to provide feedback and additional ideas!
