Do I need to stay as a student post offer?

Question for McKinsey APD recruiting

I was fortunately invited to the Insight Program in the U.S mid-April for advanced degree candidates, and will have a guaranteed interview for an associate role as an APD coming up likely early May. However, my current lab (am a postdoc) has become quite toxic and I'm not sure whether I'll be able to stay as a postdoc even if I wish to in the next few months. Will McKinsey care if I resign or leave my lab after I receive an offer (should I get one)? Thank you!

No, they won't.

And if they ask, you can be very transparent about it.

Them inviting you to this programme is based on your experience until now, not what you do until the programme starts.

So don't worry about it.

Hope you make the most out of it.

And once you get going with the applications, you might find this useful:

Hi there,

You almost certainly should be ok! Their offer would not be contigent on you staying in the postdoc role…they want you to work for them after all :)

Now, I said “should”…you need to double-check the contract. And, it wouldn't hurt to double check with HR (don't mention toxic workplace etc…just ask if it's contingent on you staying there…reasonable question as people like to travel and take holiday before the job)

Nope - as long as you have your PhD and are honest about when you started and ended your PostDoc it makes no difference

Hi there,

Q: Will McKinsey care if I resign or leave my lab after I receive an offer (should I get one)?

If you resign after the offer and there are no conditions in the offer related to your status as a postdoc, there should not be issues.

Good luck!

Hi there,

your interview invite does not depend on you maintaining your current postdoc position between now and the interview. They were obviously interested in your profile up to this point and a few months more or less of academic work will not change that.

Obviously, you shouldn't lie when being asked about it in your upcoming interview. So just think of a good explanation that avoids “complaining” about your previous employer.

Best of luck

After you get the offer you can do whatever you want :)

A lot of people just quit their jobs and have fun before they join consulting. If you're not happy there's no reason to continue doing what you are doing right now.
